(I put a) Spell on You Unwilling child actor, or a malevolent eugenics progeny? Spell on you was made in a response to the theme of collaboration and cross cultural relationship (between Melbourne and Tokyo). In response to this I chose to make a single channel video work that combines the theme of the movie “Village of the Damned” and the Qantas "I still call Australia Home" advertising campaign, as a way of challenging the idea of the individual & nationality, by creating a hybridised character whose “voice” is of a Japanese woman, but whose image is that of a young anglo/Australian boy. By using the format of a pop-song, “Spell on You” also plays with the dynamics of the singer/listener relationship and the power struggle that is played within the lyrics of a song.
